In 1981, Wendy and I bought our first business, a small engine and motorcycle shop. In the first twelve months it grew from $200,000 a year to over a million, back when a million dollars was real money.

The only thing that really changed was Wendy. She answered every call, followed up every quote and remembered every customer. People found us, trusted us and booked us, because of her.

A few years later, while our family was going through serious illness, I took my eye off the business and lost it. We rebuilt. I ran a successful IT contracting business and built a property portfolio, and I spent a long time working out what went wrong the first time. Coaching came naturally after that. For more than twenty years I took the lessons from my losses and my wins and put them to work for plumbers, electricians, builders and small service businesses across Australia. The pattern never changed. The businesses that were easy to find, easy to trust and kept their customers coming back grew. The rest did not.

Wendy passed in 2018. Before she did, she taught me one more thing: work is meant to give you a life, not take one.
